Sub Focus | Tidal Wave
Sub Focus, aka Nick Douwma from London, has been making electronic music since 2003, and his latest single “Tidal Wave” (featuring the UK duo Alpines) is a beautiful, pulse pounding slice of club-destined bliss. So ch-ch-check it out!
Dan Deacon | True Thrush
Is this the best music video of the year? It’s definitely up there for me, and not only did it put a big old smile on my face the entire time, but it’s made me want to get together with friends and copy the crap out of it. Hey, imitation is the highest form of flattery!

Dan Deacon has a new album coming out and it’s streaming over at NPR and it’s awesome!

Hot Chip | Day and Night
Holy egg deity, batman.
Yeah really I have no idea, but it’s new music from Hot Chip so i’m the cult, on board the flying yin-yang.
Paul Van Dyk | Eternity (Feat Adam Young)
Lots of cool visuals in this one. And Adam Young of Owl City (You know, the guy who sang that saccharinely over sweet “Fireflies” song?) provides guest vocals.

15. Explosions in the Sky | Take Care, Take Care, Take Care
After the earthquake and subsequent nuclear scare in Japan, I fled back to the US and escaped into this album. It’s one of those things that was so personal to me this past year that it’s hard to separate that from the actual merits of the music.
It’s been a long year for me personally, with some pretty dramatic highs and lows. But through it all, the good and the bad, one constant for me is music. I go to it for inspiration when I write, to give me something to dance like a lunatic to, to enhance the scenery of my long bike rides, turning them into small movies (in my mind), to stay with me ‘til I’m asleep at night, or, ya know, just because.
So, I decided to compile a list of the best music and videos this year. Well the best to me. So for the next month, I’m going to be posting my favorite albums, songs and music videos from the past year. I’m just one guy and unlike a fully staffed blog can’t begin to ingest everything out there. I feel like my lists are pretty eclectic, but they’re obviously biased to my tastes and there’s a good chunk of stuff I’ve heard is great, but just haven’t gotten my hands on/ears in yet. But I do hope you enjoy my selections and maybe find some awesome new music to groove to in the new year.

Dancing is literally contagious.
“Fall Creek Boys Choir” - James Blake & Bon Iver
Is it to anyone’s surprise that Justin Vernon has once again found himself involved with another phenomenal project? The prolific and widespread talents of Vernon and the brand Bon Iver have inevitably come together with the face of one James Blake. Considering the success of Blake’s eponymous full-length this year, and the inevitable critical waves that Bon Iver’s self-titled (coincidence?) ended up making, the collaboration sounds and feels as natural as it is successful at combining the two individually auspicious styles. Fear not, those of you who might worry that Blake and Bon Iver would choose to craft something entirely out of their expertise—though one would find discovering something out of the expertise of Justin Vernon extraordinarily difficult—the two artists blend their respective projects seamlessly. Be sure to look for the song next Monday on iTunes, and keep a watchful eye for “Enough Thunder,” presumably the title of a new song that is to be released sometime in October.
