Lissie | Shameless

I first heard American folk rocker Lissie back in 2010 or so with her song “When I’m Alone” from the debut album Catching a Tiger, and kind of fell in love…and then shamefully forgot about her. 

But now she’s back on my radar with “Shameless”, more rock than folk, and a big dose of awesome. I’m sorry, Lissie, for forgetting about you. Going to buy some of your music now to make up for it. 

Her new, still untitled album drops sometime this summer, 2013. 

Capital Cities | Safe and Sound

“Safe and Sound”, the excellent single from LA based Capital Cities, has been on my iPod for ages, but now it finally has a fantastic video companion (seriously, one of the best I have posted this year). 

The clip goes through the history off dance in what must be the most epic dance-off of all time. And props to those behind editing this one, because it’s very, very cleverly done.

It’s snowing in mid April here (was wearing a tshirt just a few days ago) so instead of going outside and enjoying the cherry blossoms, I’m staying in and going down endless musical rabbit trails.

Lemaitre | Fiction

Some super funky electro pop from Oslo band Lemaitre, who’ve served up a video for “Fiction” that has a concept I’d easily watch a full length feature on.

Frightened Rabbit | Backyard Skulls

Well doesn’t this dance just look fuuu~uun! “Backyard Skulls” comes from the Scottish band’s latest album Pedestrian Verse (brilliant, by the by), and is the closest they’ve gotten to sounding like Coldplay.

Frightened Rabbit | Acts of Man

“Acts of Man” is the excellent opening track from the Scottish band’s new album, Pedestrian Verse, and it and the entire album are anything but pedestrian. This is perhaps their most solid effort to date, maintaining the epic swells and hooks they’ve established themselves with while venturing off into new territories as well. 

Elliphant | Down on Life

I might as well just move to Sweden, because it is musical nirvana for me. I kid you not, everything musical that comes from there is good. I dare someone to send me something I don’t like.. 

Annnyway, Elliphant is the latest in a long list of Swedish artists that I think are pretty awesome. There’s a little bit of fellow Swede Lykke Li in “Down on Life”, mainly in the vocals, but the style is all it’s own. 

M83 | Steve McQueen

While I am a bit sad to say goodbye to the superhero children of “Midnight City” and “Reunion”, the new clip for “Steven McQueen” is awesome in it’s own right, though I’m puzzled as to what the giddy, dancing child is building. It involves lights, a house, and a bunch of animals…that’s all I got. 

So check out this awesome video to one of the highlights from last year’s Hurry Up We’re Dreaming (my album of the year for 2011). 

Dream Music | Marc Donahue and Sean Michael Williams

My friend Kat sent this my way and it’s pretty staggeringly awesome that they’ve done this all in stop motion. The music is real nice, too.

“Dream Music” is a project consisting of two  music video performed by two masters of the genre:Marc Donahue and Sean Michael Williams. Each  is impressive, mixing with stop motion the technique of lyric-lapsing, which is to synchronize the lips on words, which is incredibly difficult, especially when each music video represents more than 15,000 pictures, and every few seconds sequences requires between 6h and 8h of work… Awesome.

Dan Deacon | True Thrush

Is this the best music video of the year? It’s definitely up there for me, and not only did it put a big old smile on my face the entire time, but it’s made me want to get together with friends and copy the crap out of it. Hey, imitation is the highest form of flattery!

Snakadaktal | Young Bear

Is this one of the best band names or what? And also, these Aussies make real good music.

Devlin | Watchtower (feat Ed Sheeran)

An interesting cover of “All Along the Watchtower”, and a plot heavy video in which the plot…makes a little sense. 

My favorite cover of this track is still the version from Battlestar Galactica, but I’m a super biased fanboy in that area of the show and Bear McCreary’s amazing work.
